Baritone Dennis Blackwell is a versatile artist who has received critical acclaim for his work in opera, concert, recital, and musical theater. Recent New York and regional opera credits include New York City Opera (New York premières of Margaret Garner and Jake Heggie’s Dead Man Walking), New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players (The Usher in Trial by Jury), Gulf Coast Symphony (Frank in Die Fledermaus), Caramoor Opera (Sancio Panza in Don Chisciotte in Sierra Morena), Little Opera of New York (Nardo in Mozart’s La finta giardiniera) and Bronx Opera (Gamberotto in the American première of Rossini’s L’equivoco stravagante). Maestro Paul Gemignani chose him to join the cast of Kismet (starring Brian Stokes Mitchell and Marin Mazzie) for the maestro’s début production as music director of the Encores! concert series at New York City Center.

As a concert soloist, Mr. Blackwell has enjoyed multiple engagements with the Allentown (PA) and Norwalk (CT) Symphonies, and collaborated with the American University Symphony Orchestra (Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs), Stonewall Chorale (Messiah), Musica Antiqua New York (Mozart Missæ breves), and Bach Works (Händel's Israel in Egypt). He has offered acclaimed guest artist recitals as part of the Concert Series at St. Peter's Lutheran Church at Citicorp Center, the “Great Music” series at St. Bartholomew’s Church, and at the Donnell Library in New York City. He makes his cabaret début in March 2008 with pianist Jason Hart at the Metropolitan Room in Manhattan.

Mr. Blackwell’s wide-ranging credits include several of the baritone roles in Gilbert & Sullivan’s operettas, grand opera, zarzuela, cabaret, and musicals, in appearances with the Washington Savoyards, Commonwealth Opera of Massachusetts, Baltimore’s Opera Vivente, Washington Concert Opera, Wolf Trap Opera, Summer Opera Theatre, Regina Opera, and Annapolis Opera Outreach. In 2005, he performed in Olivier Cadiot’s experimental spoken word/music piece A.W.O.L. with In Parenthesis Theater for the “Act French” New Theater Festival. Some of Mr. Blackwell’s favorite roles include Don Alfonso (Così fan tutte), Dandini (La cenerentola), Sam (Trouble in Tahiti), the title role in The Mikado, and Larry Hastings in Bells Are Ringing, which he performed at the Kennedy Center’s Words & Music series with Faith Prince.
